I’ve lived in Sarasota since 1971. I took this picture of a windsurfer in the park across from Bird Key. I remember watching people windsurfing in this spot when I was a kid, some 45 years ago.

I’m guessing that people windsurf here for several reasons:

  1. The water isn’t very deep
  2. There’s parking available within about thirty feet from the shoreline
  3. This isn’t a high traffic area for boats
  4. There’s a small launching pad
  5. Obviously, this must be a good area where the wind currents are particularly strong
  6. Even though the wind blows hard in this area the water doesn’t get overly rough
  7. Spectators can easily watch people windsurfing from the shore
  8. Windsurfers can top out at speeds of about 48 miles per hour
