I actually captured what I wanted to when taking this image of underneath the John Ringling Causeway Bridge. The intention wasn’t to have the fishermen as the focal point, but rather the awe of the massive support structure underneath the bridge.
I am amazed at how using the zoom feature on my Nikon Coolpix P600 camera made the distance across the Sarasota bay look so short. According to Wikipedia the bridge spans 3,097 feet over the inner coastal water way. Given that there’s 5280 feet in a mile, in this picture, it’s a little over a half mile across the bay from the West to East end of the bridge. The photo makes the distance across the water look like it’s about the length of a football field (100 yards).
Interesting Facts About The Bridge:
- Construction started in 2001 and finished in 2003
- Overall length 943.98 m (3,097 ft)
- Bridge fabrication cost was 68,000,000
